How to choose your first ergonomic chair

Everything you need to know before buying. Measurements, adjustments, materials and what brands to avoid.

An ergonomic chair is not a luxury: it's a health investment. 80% of back problems in office workers can be prevented with the right equipment. But not every "ergonomic" chair actually delivers on that promise.

The first priority is seat height. It should allow you to keep your feet flat on the floor and your knees at 90 degrees. If you're particularly tall or short, check the adjustment range before buying. Many cheap chairs have too limited a range.

Lumbar support is the most critical factor. Look for chairs with height and depth-adjustable lumbar support, not fixed. The lumbar zone should support your spine's natural curve without pushing you forward. Chairs with fixed lumbar support are built for a standard posture, not yours.

4D armrests (height, width, depth and angle) are essential if you type for many hours. Your elbows should be at 90 degrees and shoulders relaxed. Fixed or 1D armrests are almost useless for serious work and can cause shoulder tension.

Finally, seat depth: there should be 5–8 cm of space between the edge of the seat and the back of your knees. If the seat is too deep, you'll be forced to sit on the edge or stop using the backrest altogether.
