Frequently asked questions

USB or XLR microphone?

For 95% of cases, USB: it plugs straight into the computer, no mixer, and sounds more than enough for meetings, podcasts and video. XLR offers professional quality but needs an audio interface; only if you're serious about production.

Condenser or dynamic?

Condenser if your room is quiet: it captures more detail... and more ambience. Dynamic if there's echo or background noise: it forgives imperfect rooms. Rule of thumb: in a noisy room, a well-placed dynamic beats the most expensive condenser used badly.

Why do I sound bad even with a good mic?

Almost always placement. The mic should be 15-25 cm from your mouth, slightly below or beside it, pointing at you (never straight on). A pop filter removes "p" bursts. The gear matters, but distance and angle matter more.
