How to choose an ergonomic chair in 2026: everything you need to know

Which adjustments are essential, which brands to avoid and how to choose well based on your height, weight and daily hours of use.

The lie about "ergonomic" chairs

Any chair can carry the "ergonomic" label. It's an unregulated marketing term. What determines if a chair is truly ergonomic are the adjustments it has and the quality with which they're implemented.

A truly ergonomic chair lets you adapt every element to the shape of your body. A "ergonomic" chair for €60 has a nice logo and a label. The difference is radical.

The 4 adjustments that really matter

1. Height and depth adjustable lumbar support

The lumbar support must be adjustable on two axes: up and down (to align with your lumbar zone, which varies with height) and forward and backward (to adapt to your spine's natural curve).

A fixed lumbar support is calibrated for a standard back, which is rarely yours. If you can't adjust the lumbar support in height, the chair already starts with a serious limitation.

2. 4D armrests

4D armrests adjust in four dimensions: height (so elbows are at 90°), width (to bring them closer or further from your body), depth (forward or backward) and angle (lateral tilt).

Poorly positioned elbows generate tension in the shoulders and neck. 1D armrests (height only) are better than none, but rarely achieve the ideal position.

3. Adjustable seat depth

Seat depth determines how much your thighs are supported. The standard is that there should be 5 to 8 centimeters of space between the seat edge and the back of your knees.

If the seat is too deep for your height, you either sit on the edge (without using the backrest) or compress the back of the knees (cutting circulation). If too short, the thighs don't rest correctly.

4. Backrest tension

The backrest should be able to recline with your body when you lean back, but with enough tension that it doesn't push you forward when you lean in. This adjustment is the most ignored and one of the most important for long sessions.

By height: what to look for

  • **Under 165 cm:** Look for chairs with seat range 40-50 cm and lower backrest. Many large chairs don't adjust low enough.
  • **165-185 cm:** Most market chairs are designed for this range. You have more options.
  • **Over 185 cm:** You need chairs with wide adjustment ranges. The Herman Miller Aeron has A, B and C configurations by height.

Mesh vs foam vs leather: which to choose

  • **Mesh:** Best ventilation, doesn't retain heat. Most recommended for warm climates and long summer sessions. The Sidiz T50 and Herman Miller Aeron are mesh.
  • **High-density foam:** More contouring sensation and support from first use. Can retain more heat. The Sihoo M57 has a foam seat with mesh backrest, a good balance.
  • **Leather or faux leather:** Easy to clean but warmer. Popular in gaming (Secretlab Titan Evo). Not recommended for warm climates or 8-hour sessions.

Warranty as a quality indicator

A chair's warranty says a lot about the manufacturer's confidence in their product:

  • **2 years:** Basic range. The manufacturer doesn't trust it to last longer.
  • **3-5 years:** Mid range. Acceptable for moderate use.
  • **10-12 years:** Premium range. Herman Miller gives 12 years. Steelcase Leap, 12 years. This is the guarantee the product lasts.

How much to spend based on your case

If you work less than 4 hours a day in the chair: €150-250 is sufficient. If you work between 4 and 8 hours: invest between €300 and €600. If you work 8+ hours or have back problems: consider premium range (€800-1,500). The daily cost of a Herman Miller Aeron amortized over 10 years is under €0.50/day.
