How to organize your setup cables: the definitive guide
Messy cables ruin any setup. Techniques, products and systems for a perfectly organized desk.
Why cable management matters beyond aesthetics
A setup with messy cables isn't just ugly: it's functionally and psychologically damaging. Loose cables accumulate dust, can pull devices if you snag them, make cleaning the desk take twice as long and create a visual sense of chaos that affects concentration.
A desk with zero visible cables doesn't require buying anything expensive: it requires planning well.
The three-layer system for organizing cables
The most efficient approach divides cables into three categories by position:
- ✓**Layer 1 - Cables on the desk:** Only the monitor cable should be here (or none if you use a USB-C monitor that charges the laptop), the mouse and keyboard (if wired). Everything else goes down.
- ✓**Layer 2 - Cables under the desk:** This is where all power cables go, the hub or dock, the laptop charger and any data cables that don't need to be on the desk.
- ✓**Layer 3 - The power strip:** Fixed under the desk with velcro or clips, invisible from above. Centralizes all plugs in one point.
The tools that actually work
- ✓**Reusable velcro ties:** The best for bundling cables. They're reusable (you can open them and readjust when you change something), don't damage cables like plastic zip ties, and cost under €5 for a pack of 50.
- ✓**Desk cable manager trunking:** Attaches under the tabletop and channels all cables along the back of the desk. The IKEA Signum is the most popular (€15) but there are better versions with more capacity.
- ✓**Under-desk cable tray:** For those who want to hide not just cables but also the power strip, hub and charger. They're completely out of sight.
- ✓**Adhesive cable clips for desk:** To guide specific cables along the edge or back of the tabletop. Available in black, white and wood colors.
Step by step: reorganizing a setup from scratch
First, disconnect everything and start from zero. This is the moment to plan what goes where before reconnecting anything.
Second step is to centralize into a hub or dock. If you have more than 3 cables connected to the laptop, an 8-port hub with a single cable to the laptop radically reduces cables on the desk. The CalDigit TS4 connects everything (two monitors, audio, USB, ethernet, charging) with a single Thunderbolt cable.
Third step: fix the power strip under the desk with industrial velcro (strong, reusable). Run all power cables down the back desk leg, bundle them with velcro ties and they disappear from view.
Fourth step: manage remaining cables on the desk. If the mouse or keyboard are wired, guide them along the back of the tabletop with adhesive clips. The goal is that the cable reaches the device without being visible from the front.
The special case of electric standing desks
Height-adjustable electric desks have the additional challenge that cables must allow for vertical movement. The solution is to leave enough slack in all cables and use a cable drag chain that rises and falls with the desk.
How long it takes and how much it costs
Reorganizing a complete setup from scratch: 2-3 hours. Budget needed: €20-40 (velcro ties, adhesive clips, under-desk manager). The result lasts years without needing to redo anything.
